Rumor has it that Sony is working on a dream phone with a rollable display and 10x zoom camera. This is a so-called “nautilus design” and reportedly uses an LG Display panel.
LG demoed a 65” rollable OLED TV at CES 2018, this could be a smaller version of the same tech. That was just a prototype, but the company will start selling it as the Signature Series R later this year.
The rollable Sony Xperia is still in the prototype stage as well, currently powered by a Qualcomm SM7250 chipset (Snapdragon 710). The production model should upgrade to Snapdragon 855 with a X50 modem for 5G connectivity.
The phone is said to have a 10x zoom camera. It’s unclear if this is 5x optical and 10x hybrid or actual optical 10x zoom (which would be a first). Also, it’s powered by a 3,220mAh battery, likely constrained by the rollable form factor (foldable phones use two regular batteries).
Speaking of form factor, will this phone roll up into a cylinder? This would be a great shape for a long focal length lens, but it will need a prism to reflect light 90°. Otherwise, it would be quite awkward to use the screen as a viewfinder.
The rollable Sony Xperia could launch December this year or in early 2020.
